What is Parkinson’s disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a nervous system disorder that affects movement. Most people recognize the condition for the tremors it causes, which can become severe in more advanced stages. At first the tremors may be very subtle—a slight tremor in one hand, for example—but may become progressively worse over time. Parkinson’s also causes stiffness and slowing of movement, which can significantly reduce a person’s mobility.

Parkinson’s appears to progress in stages, from mild to severe, as follows:

Stage 1: During the initial phase of the disease the person usually experiences mild symptoms, such as a minor tremble in one hand, unusual facial expressions and minor difficulty performing everyday tasks.

Stage 2:  In the second stage, the person’s symptoms usually occur on both sides of the body (bilaterally). The person may experience difficulty walking, keeping their balance and with normal tasks.

Stage 3: At this stage symptoms can become much more severe, affecting a person’s ability to walk or stand.

Stage 4: Most people in this stage of the disease are unable to live alone and care for themselves. Symptoms often include rigid stiffness and slowness of movement, and extreme difficulty walking.

Stage 5: Parkinson’s sufferers in this final stage of the disease are almost always unable to care for themselves. The person may not be able to stand or walk at all, and may require round-the-clock nursing care.

In the later stages of Parkinson’s it may become especially difficult or impossible for a person to care for themselves. This is where Raya’s can help. Our beautiful facilities are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week and feature a visiting physician as well as a highly trained caregiver staff.
